Artist-in-Residence Program

MOCA Tucson Artist-in-Residence Program
Residency Dates: October 1-December 31, 2017

ABOUT

MOCA TUCSON’S MISSION IS TO INSPIRE NEW WAYS OF THINKING THROUGH THE CULTIVATION, INTERPRETATION, AND EXHIBITION OF CUTTING-EDGE ART OF OUR TIME.

Established by artists, MOCA is Tucson’s only museum devoted exclusively to contemporary art from around the globe. MOCA is committed to thinking globally, acting locally, and engaging with the aesthetics of contemporary life. Through varied programs, MOCA is Tucson’s primary educational resource for contemporary art and maintains a full exhibition, education, and artist-in-residence program.

In the fall of 2017, MOCA is re-launching its Artist-in-Residence program. Artists working in all media and at any stage of their career are welcome to apply for residencies for a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum of 3 months between October 1 and December 31, 2017. The selected artists will each receive a 400 sq. ft. live/work space to create new work at MOCA Tucson with the option of a solo presentation of that work in January 2018. Artists are required to spend a minimum of 25 hours/week working in their studio. Artists will have free WiFi, access to shared bathrooms/kitchens/library/living space, and access to a shared woodshop/production space. Artists are encouraged to give a public lecture and/or workshop during the course of the residency for which stipends will be offered. During the course of the residency, we will arrange for curator visits to the artists’ studios. MOCA staff is on-hand to provide technical support and to respond to the studio needs of our Artists-in-Residence. Spouses, children, and pups are all welcome to visit and live with selected artists during their residency.

MOCA offers live/work studio space, exhibition opportunity, marketing support, and a nominal $1,000 production stipend only. Travel to/from the residency is the responsibility of the artist. MOCA will also produce a short video documenting artists’ experiences/process during the residency that can be used on the artists’ websites. Application Deadline is TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2017, 5PM PST. The selected artists will be notified by August 10, 2017.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
Artists working in all media and at all levels of their career are encouraged to apply. Applications will be judged based on the quality or work samples, statement of purpose, and potential to make the most of their time in the program. A panel of arts professionals and artists will review applications and select artists for the fall 2017 session. All applicants will be notified by e-mail. PLEASE DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL MOCA FOR SELECTION RESULTS.

ELIGIBILITY
All applicants must be able to work in the United States, 18 years or older, not currently enrolled in any degree program, and able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the residency.
