ArtNow! with Gelare Khoshgozaran
Tuesday, November 21
6:00pm – 7:00pm

Participating in MOCA’s Artist in Residency program, Gelare Khoshgozaran گلاره خوشگذران is an interdisciplinary artist and writer working across the mediums of video, performance, installation, and writing. Born and raised in Tehran, she lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at Queens Museum, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Southern Exposure, Museo Ex-Teresa Arte Actual, and Malmö Konsthall. Gelare was the recipient of the 2015 California
Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists, the 2015 Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant, and the 2016 Rema Hort Mann Foundation Award for Emerging Artists. Born and raised in Tehran, she lives and works in Los Angeles. Gelare is the co-founder and editor of contemptorary.org

For her lecture, Gelare explains “Making art that involves historical research around lived experience makes it impossible to draw a clear line between fact and fiction. This inevitable turn towards speculation manifests in my various projects in different forms. In this lecture I share some of my ongoing and recent projects discussing the Middle East as simulacrum, and petroleum as the ultimate form of abstraction.”

ArtNow! gives you the opportunity to engage with wildly disparate practices collectively known as “the art of our time” during this playful lecture series.
